I guess every family has that one person who treats your home like an all-inclusive resort but can\u2019t even bother to bring a pack of ice. If you don\u2019t have such a person in your life, consider yourself lucky, and trust me when I say it.<\/p>\n
For me, that\u2019s my mother-in-law, Juliette. She comes with her daughters, all of their six kids, lots of luggage, and not an intention to put in any money at all.<\/p>\n
So, finally, after many years of being the happy, tired hostess, I had enough. There were here again, empty-handed, and I decided to serve them the reality check.<\/p>\n
Let me explain what happened. I\u2019ve been married to Bryan for seven years already. We have two lovely children and a nice small house in the countryside. Everything was fine until Juliette decided that our home should be her vacation spot. This lady is as sure of herself as Queen Elizabeth and as self-aware as a dinner plate.<\/p>\n
Several weeks before the Fourth, she suddenly calls me up to tell me that they are coming to celebrate Memorial Day. Didn\u2019t even ask, just informed me like that. \u201cAnnie, darling, we are coming for the weekend! The kids love your ribs.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nOf course they love them! Why wouldn\u2019t they? I\u2019m the one who buys them, marinates them, stands over the hot grill cooking them, and cleans up the mess while Juliette sits on my patio telling me what I\u2019m doing wrong.<\/p>\n
This Memorial Day weekend was the last straw. Juliette walked into my front door and instantly started moving the furniture in my living room around because \u201cshe has an eye for design.\u201d Her daughters Sarah and Kate made my kitchen counters look like an absolute mess with bags and toys everywhere. They have children running wild around \u2013 one of them has practically made a puddle of popsicle juice on my white carpet and complained about lack of \u201cgood snacks\u201d.<\/p>\n
When we got to the point to load the dishwasher that evening, I looked at Bryan and asked him if he was aware on how much we spent on feeding his family. He felt guilty, took a deep breath and said he will definitely talk to her. Let me be honest, he hates to disappoint his mother, so I was sure nothing was going to change.<\/p>\n
And there on the following morning, my telephone rings. It is Juliette.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnnie, darling! We had a wonderful time. We are all returning for the Fourth of July weekend! The entire crew. Make sure you have lots of those tiny sausages and do not forget the ribs!\u201d<\/p>\n
And then she simply hung up. Three whole days of feeding ten people at my expense and she didn\u2019t even offer to bring along a side dish!<\/p>\n
When I told Bryan about it that night, he got scared. He asked whether I was okay with it. All I did was look at him and say, \u201cYes, I am absolutely fine.\u201d

This is when I came up with my plan.<\/p>\n
Friday evening arrives. Three cars arrive at my doorstep. No grocery bags. Juliette gets out under that huge sun hat as if she expects to walk down a red carpet and her children start pouring out like beasts from a zoo. And she just says to me, \u201cI hope everything is prepared, we are starving!\u201d<\/p>\n
I told her that it was nearly done. I had set up the backyard picnic table to be absolutely stunning\u2014with wildflowers in mason jars, beautiful napkins, freshly made lemonade. It was beautiful, just like in a magazine.<\/p>\n
Sarah sat down and said, \u201cWell, as usual, you always make everything so beautiful.\u201d And then Kate looked around and asked, \u201cAnd where\u2019s the food?\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled and said, \u201cIt\u2019s on its way.\u201d<\/p>\n
I went inside the kitchen and came back out with my creation\u2014a tray with little sandwiches of cucumber, without the crusts, and some warm black tea.<\/p>\n
Silence followed me everywhere. Juliette looked at the tray as if I had just given her an income tax report.

She said, \u201cAnnie, where is the barbecue?\u201d<\/p>\n
I tipped my head and replied, \u201cOh, no. This time, I didn\u2019t do any shopping! Considering how much everybody enjoys our barbecues, I assumed you all would want to come with the meat yourselves. There is an excellent butcher, about fifteen minutes from here, open till six. The grill is set and the charcoal is waiting!\u201d<\/p>\n
Juliette went red. \u201cBut you have invited us!\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at her straight in the eye. \u201cActually, you all have invited yourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
And before we knew it, the children were begging for hot dogs and hamburgers, and Juliette leapt out of her chair so quickly that she almost overturned it. She whispered, \u201cThis is very rude of you, Annie. We are your family.\u201d<\/p>\n
I only shrugged. \u201cThis is precisely the point. And families help each other out. You know that we host every holiday ever since four years ago.\u201d

Sarah and Kate acted like I was some kind of criminal. They turned to Bryan, thinking he would help them. But bless his heart, he rose up to the challenge. He looked directly at his mother and said, \u201cThere is a very nice meat market down the street. I can show you how to get there, or we can do it together.\u201d<\/p>\n
That drove Juliette crazy. She shrieked back at her son, \u201cI cannot believe you are siding with this selfishness!\u201d<\/p>\n
But Bryan, with utter calmness, simply said, \u201cI\u2019m not siding with anything. I\u2019m siding with my wife.\u201d I loved that guy even more than before.<\/p>\n
Anyway, they left within an hour. While packing up their children into the cars, Juliette gave me her most dramatic parting line: \u201cYou\u2019ve turned my son against his own family.I hope you are happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
I just waved to her and said, \u201cI\u2019m getting there!\u201d<\/p>\n
The following morning, I awoke to seventeen missed calls and a bunch of Facebook notification. Juliette had posted this utterly toxic, dramatic outburst claiming that I was a \u201cheartless daughter-in-law\u201d who \u201cspoiled the holiday for innocent children\u201d and would not even feed them.<\/p>\n
But what Juliette did not remember was one thing\u2014that I save receipts. Literally.<\/p>\n
Instead of starting an argument with her in the comment section, I did not stoop to her level, but rather opened up my phone and compiled photos of every single barbecue we\u2019ve had in the past four years\u2014tables piled high with food, her smiling with a full plate in her hand, her daughters enjoying themselves with piles of ribs. I then took photos of the itemized receipts of my hundreds of dollars spent.<\/p>\n
Posted everything in a huge photo album with one simple caption: \u201cJust wanted to share some of the lovely memories from our gatherings as a family. Thank you so much for those amazing times together!\u201d

The internet jumped on it instantly. People posted comments asking why this \u201cloving family\u201d couldn\u2019t contribute one dish to the party and said cucumber sandwiches were indeed food and thus her statement was a complete lie. Within two days, her status had vanished without a trace.<\/p>\n
For the first time in seven years, I enjoyed silence on my holiday weekends at home.<\/p>\n
Honestly? Some of the loudest messages you can send are carried on a plate with the crust cut off. If people wish to contribute absolutely nothing to your gathering, let them have nothing.<\/p>\n
