It had one bedroom, a tiny kitchen and a floor that tilted near the bathroom. The refrigerator buzzed constantly, and the window above the sink looked out over a row of tomato plants.<\/p>\n
To me, it looked like safety.<\/p>\n
Trixie ran into the bedroom.<\/p>\n
\u201cCan I put stars on the ceiling?\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at me.<\/p>\n

That was all.<\/p>\n
We arrived with six boxes, two suitcases and a mattress my sister had given us. Trixie slept in the bedroom while I slept on a narrow sofa in the living room.<\/p>\n
The first night, rain hit the roof so loudly that she came out carrying her blanket.<\/p>\n

I lifted the blanket.<\/p>\n

That became our life.<\/p>\n
I worked mornings at the dental office and evening shifts at a bakery three nights a week. I used coupons, patched my shoes and learned which bills could be delayed.<\/p>\n
But the rent was always paid first.<\/p>\n
On the first day of each month, I wrote Mr. Alvarez a cheque and slid it beneath his back door.<\/p>\n
He never gave me a receipt.<\/p>\n
I never asked.<\/p>\n
He mostly kept to himself, but he quietly repaired things before I could complain. He fixed a loose step, left oranges outside our door and pretended they had simply appeared because his tree had produced too many.<\/p>\n
Then, three months after we moved in, I noticed something strange.<\/p>\n
My rent cheque had never cleared.<\/p>\n
The $800 was still sitting in my account.<\/p>\n
I immediately knocked on his door.<\/p>\n
