And I cried for Mr. Alvarez, who had carried one terrible mistake for years and had chosen to turn his regret into mercy.<\/p>\n
He remained at the table and allowed me to cry.<\/p>\n
When I finally calmed down, I asked, \u201cWhy are you doing this now?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause you came to my door angry.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stared at him.<\/p>\n
He shrugged.<\/p>\n

That answer stayed with me.<\/p>\n
Three years earlier, I would have apologised for knocking. I would have accepted his vague answer and returned home to worry alone.<\/p>\n

He glanced at the photograph of Sofia and Camila.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I saw Trixie learning to ride her bicycle in the driveway.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe crashed into your tomato plants.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe apologised to every one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe is a good child.\u201d<\/p>\n
I reached across the table and placed my hand over his.<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

That evening, I told Trixie that our little apartment finally belonged to us.<\/p>\n
She stared at me from the sofa.<\/p>\n

He froze.<\/p>\n
For a moment, he did not know what to do.<\/p>\n
Then he slowly placed one hand against her back.<\/p>\n
For the first time since I had met him, his face revealed everything.<\/p>\n
Grief was there.<\/p>\n
But so was love.<\/p>\n
Years later, the shoebox still sits on the highest shelf of my closet.<\/p>\n
Every cheque remains inside.<\/p>\n
I keep them because they remind me that kindness does not always arrive with speeches or grand promises.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it looks like an old man in a grey shirt quietly refusing to cash a cheque.<\/p>\n
Sometimes it is a tiny apartment with a buzzing refrigerator, a crooked floor and a window overlooking someone else\u2019s tomatoes.<\/p>\n
And sometimes the person who helps you rebuild your life is not someone who gives you everything.<\/p>\n
