HEISE, Idaho — A fast-moving wildfire ignited in the foothills near Heise on Friday evening, prompting immediate evacuations and leaving the blaze at zero percent containment.
The Big Rock Fire was first reported around 5:30 p.m. north of Kelly Canyon Road and east of Heise. Fueled by juniper, sagebrush, and dry grass, the fire spread rapidly across hundreds of acres, fueled by erratic wind shifts and low humidity.
Evacuations and Closures
Emergency officials from Jefferson and Madison counties ordered immediate evacuations for all homes, businesses, and campgrounds from the Heise Bridge to Kelly Canyon Ski Resort. Staff and guests at Heise Hot Springs were also evacuated as roads leading into the area were shut down.
In addition, residents living along South Snake River Road, north of the Snake River, have been placed on high alert and advised to prepare for immediate evacuation. The South Fork Canyon has been closed to boaters, along with local camping grounds including Fulmer and Wolf Flats.
An evacuation shelter has been established by the American Red Cross at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building in Ririe (14061 North 130 East).
Emergency Response
More than a dozen local and federal firefighting agencies—including Central Fire, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and the U.S. Forest Service—are actively working on the ground to protect homes and critical infrastructure.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the entire area to allow emergency crews and heavy firefighting equipment to operate safely.
