PART 2: THE SECRETS INSIDE THE HOUSE
The following morning, investigators searched Julian and Victoria’s home.
They discovered medical supplies, unapproved medication and written records showing when Chloe had been given doses that made her unusually sleepy.
On Julian’s computer, detectives found a falsified death certificate.
The doctor named on the document confirmed that he had never examined Chloe.
Police also questioned the private funeral-service operator. He admitted Julian had paid in cash and demanded an immediate, private service without the usual medical verification.
More evidence was found on Victoria’s phone.
In messages to a relative, she complained that caring for Chloe prevented the family from living the perfect life she wanted. Since the birth of their younger child, Leo, Chloe had slowly disappeared from family photographs and social-media posts.
Victoria frequently shared pictures of her young son while telling friends that Chloe was too ill or anxious to appear in public.
Eleanor remembered every missed visit and unanswered call.
She remembered Julian describing Chloe as difficult and demanding.
But Chloe had never been difficult.
She was a frightened child who needed care, patience and protection.
A detective asked Eleanor whether she believed the couple knew Chloe was still alive when they placed her in the casket.
Eleanor thought about Victoria’s words outside the laundry room and Julian’s attempt to prevent her from calling for help.
“Yes,” she answered quietly.
Investigators reached the same conclusion.
Security footage from inside the house showed Julian carrying an unconscious Chloe into the living room while Victoria followed close behind.
An audio recording also captured Julian saying that once the funeral was completed, people would stop asking questions.
While the case became a major local news story, Eleanor remained at Chloe’s hospital bedside.
The little girl became nervous whenever a door closed. She asked permission before drinking water, eating food or speaking. She even hid crackers beneath her pillow because she feared there might not be enough later.
A child psychologist explained that Chloe’s fear had developed over a long period of isolation, neglect and excessive control.
Eleanor was overwhelmed with regret.
She remembered times when Chloe had appeared unusually tired or pale. Victoria always provided an explanation, and Eleanor had wanted to believe her son would never allow his child to be harmed.
Meanwhile, child-protection officials placed two-year-old Leo with a temporary foster family while the investigation continued. Eleanor applied for custody of both children.
Even after everything she had experienced, Chloe worried about her younger brother.
“Leo didn’t do anything wrong,” she said.
She did not resent the toddler for receiving their parents’ attention. Instead, she remembered comforting him and helping pick up his toys whenever their parents were busy.
Prosecutors reconstructed the events leading to Chloe’s discovery.
Victoria had become obsessed with maintaining the appearance of a flawless family. She followed unreliable online advice and kept Chloe away from doctors because she feared questions about the child’s condition.
When Chloe developed a genuine respiratory illness, Victoria attempted to treat her at home.
Julian eventually realised how serious the situation had become.
However, instead of calling an ambulance, he helped Victoria conceal what had happened because he feared losing his career, reputation and custody of Leo.
Another recording captured the couple discussing what they would say if Eleanor noticed anything unusual.
Julian suggested blaming his mother’s age and grief.
Eleanor listened to the recording at the prosecutor’s office, struggling to recognise the voice of the son she had raised.
She finally understood that loving someone did not require protecting them from the consequences of their choices.
A week later, Julian asked to meet her from jail.
He claimed that the situation had become uncontrollable and placed most of the blame on Victoria.
“I never wanted Chloe to suffer,” he said.
“You knew she needed help,” Eleanor replied. “But you chose to hide the truth.”
Julian then asked her to tell the court that he had always been a responsible father.
He did not ask how Chloe was feeling.
He did not ask whether she was recovering.
He only wanted Eleanor to protect him.
“I will not lie for you,” she said.
“I’m your son,” Julian protested.
“And Chloe is your daughter. She needed you to protect her.”
When Julian accused Eleanor of destroying his future, she remained calm.
“Your choices brought you here,” she answered.
Then she ended the meeting and walked away.
