CONSUMER ALERT — “Don’t be fooled. They are selling you meat with…”

A viral warning is sweeping social media as food safety experts and former butcher shop employees expose the sneaky tricks used by certain retailers to disguise spoiled or low-quality meat, making it look fresh to unsuspecting shoppers.

How Grocery Stores Disguise Old Meat
While most supermarkets follow strict health codes, consumer advocates warn that some vendor practices are specifically designed to manipulate the appearance of meat products right before they expire.

Here are the most common tricks exposed by industry insiders:

Carbon Monoxide Gas Injection: Many commercial packaging facilities flush meat trays with carbon monoxide (CO) gas. This locks in a bright, artificial cherry-red color—even when the meat is starting to spoil internally.

Red Lighting in Display Cases: Specialty pink or red LED lighting in meat aisles creates an optical illusion that masks discoloration, making greyish or brownish cuts appear fresh and vibrant.

Heavy Marination & Seasoning: Pre-seasoned, heavily marinated, or pre-cooked meat trays are often used to repurpose cuts that are past their prime visual appeal, using strong spices to mask off-odors and texture changes.

Repackaging and Relabeling: In improper operations, older cuts are trimmed of their discolored edges, placed on new trays with fresh plastic wrap, and stamped with a brand-new “packaged on” date.

How to Spot Fresh Meat (and Avoid the Trap)
Experts advise buyers not to rely solely on color when shopping for beef, pork, or poultry. Follow these guidelines to stay safe:

Smell and Texture Over Color: Natural fresh beef can actually look slightly brownish-purple when sealed tightly away from oxygen. Trust your nose—sour or ammonia-like smells mean it’s bad, regardless of color.

Check the Liquid: Avoid packages with excessive poolings of cloudy or thick liquid at the bottom of the tray.

Touch Test: Fresh meat should spring back when pressed gently through the plastic; if it feels slimy, overly soft, or sticky, leave it on the shelf.
