“Then why sign the agreement at all?”

Because I discovered what your parents intended to do if I refused.”

Something in his voice silenced me.

“What were they planning?”

“They had chosen a residential facility called Willow Grove.”

I had never heard the name, but I could tell from the way he spoke that Rosie had never been part of that decision.

“Your mother showed me the brochure,” he continued. “She said you deserved your own future and shouldn’t be expected to care for Rosie.”

My anger faltered, replaced by disbelief.

“I would never have abandoned her.”

“They knew that. That’s why they weren’t planning to tell you until everything had already been arranged.”

I lowered myself onto a nearby chair.

Ben continued, his eyes fixed on the floor.

“They spoke about her as though she were a problem they needed to solve. They said she would eventually require more support and that placing her somewhere else would be best for everyone.”

My hands tightened around the document.

“So they offered you money.”

“They believed marriage would transfer responsibility for Rosie to me. I signed because it gave me a way to stop them. But I did not marry her because of the agreement.”

“Why did you marry her?”

Ben looked up.

There was no hesitation in his voice.

“I loved her before they approached me. I loved the way she finds joy in small things. I loved that she remembers everyone’s favorite dessert. I loved that she believed my childhood promises even when I was still learning what promises meant.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I would have married Rosie without a penny. The agreement simply gave me the legal protection and resources to make sure no one could take her choices away.”

I looked again at his signature.

“Did Rosie know?”

“Not at first.”

The admission hurt.

“I told her after our first anniversary. I couldn’t continue keeping it from her.”

“What did she say?”

“She cried.”

Ben’s mouth lifted in a broken smile.

“Then she told me she had always known our parents underestimated her. After that, she laughed and said, ‘Well, the money belongs to me, and I’m still keeping the husband.’”

Despite everything, a small, painful laugh escaped me.

“Why didn’t either of you tell me?”

“Rosie was afraid you would confront your parents and tear the family apart. She wanted peace. I promised I would stay silent unless she asked me to speak.”

And tonight she asked you.”

Ben nodded.

“She told me that secrets should not outlive the people they were meant to protect.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

I remembered the way Ben looked at Rosie during their wedding. The flowers on Tuesdays. The endless patience. The private jokes. The home they had built.

None of it had been false.

The contract was real, but so was their love.

“I hated you for about two minutes,” I whispered.

Ben wiped his face.

“I wouldn’t have blamed you if it had been longer.”

Part Five: The Truth Reaches the Hallway
Footsteps approached from the far end of the corridor.

The doctor was returning.

Ben and I rose quickly.

Before he reached us, the elevator doors opened, and my parents stepped out. My mother carried her coat neatly over one arm. My father looked as composed as if he had arrived for a business meeting.

They hurried toward us.

“How is she?” my mother asked.

The doctor stopped beside us.

“Rosie is stable,” he said. “Both babies are breathing independently, and their condition is encouraging.”
